Organic pigment pricing varies from ₹400-5000+/kg by chemistry family. Azo pigments are cheapest; quinacridone, DPP, and benzimidazolone are 4-10x more expensive. Pricing depends on volume (higher = lower unit price), packaging, freight (air vs sea), payment terms, and required certifications. Bulk LC contracts at 25-100kg starting MOQ achieve best per-kg pricing.
Pigment pricing has more variables than first-time buyers expect. The same CI code can range 30-50% in price depending on grade variants, surface treatment, certifications, MOQ, packaging, and incoterms. This guide explains the pricing structure so you can negotiate effectively.

What drives pricing within a single CI code
1. Surface treatment. Same PY154 with no treatment costs less than surface-treated for waterborne or specifically-treated for powder coating. The treatment adds 10-25%.
2. Particle size and PSD. Ultra-fine grades (d50 less than 0.5 micron, narrow PSD) for powder coatings or digital ink cost more than standard grades.
3. Required certifications. NSF (potable water) and FDA (food contact) certifications add cost because they require third-party annual audits and dedicated batch tracking.
4. MOQ and order frequency. 25kg MOQ has higher per-kg cost than 1000kg order. Annual contract with 12 monthly shipments achieves better per-kg pricing than spot orders.
5. Packaging. 25kg paper bags cheapest; 10kg paper bags 5-10% premium; HDPE drums 10-15% premium; sealed inert-atmosphere packaging for sensitive grades 15-25% premium.
6. Payment and incoterms. Advance TT cheapest (no credit cost). Letter of Credit (LC) usance adds 2-5% to cover bank costs. EXW vs FOB vs CIF shifts who pays freight and insurance.
Negotiation tactics for buyers
1. Annual contract with monthly call-offs. Lock the per-kg price for 12 months in exchange for committed volume. Suppliers prefer predictable demand and offer 5-10% off spot pricing.
2. Consolidate grades. If you order 5 different yellow grades from 3 suppliers, consolidating to 2 grades from 1 supplier reduces inventory cost AND gives you better per-kg pricing through volume.
3. Larger packaging. If your usage allows, switch from 10kg bags to 25kg bags or HDPE drums to save 5-10% per kg in packaging costs.
4. Pay in advance for new suppliers. First-time orders with TT advance often get 2-3% better pricing than LC because the supplier saves bank costs and credit risk.
5. Sea freight, not air. Air freight adds 10-30% to delivered cost. Plan ahead with sea freight for 4-6 week lead times to save significantly.
6. Specify only certifications you actually need. Don't request NSF or FDA documentation for non-applicable grades — it adds cost. Standard REACH + RoHS + 24-amines-free covers 90% of buyer needs.
