TL;DR

Store organic pigments in original sealed packaging at 5-30°C, less than 60% humidity, away from direct sun and contamination sources. Typical shelf life: 2-3 years for powders, 12-18 months for pastes and dispersions. Use FIFO rotation. Re-test before use if storage exceeds 18 months.

Properly stored organic pigments maintain their full spec through 2-3 year shelf life. Improperly stored pigments — exposed to humidity, sunlight, or contamination — can shift shade, agglomerate, or fail dispersion tests months before their stated expiry. This guide covers the practical storage controls.

Storage conditions

Temperature: 5-30°C ideal. Avoid temperatures above 35°C (degrades surface treatments) and below freezing (can cause moisture condensation issues on warming).

Humidity: Less than 60% relative humidity. Higher humidity can cause moisture pickup, especially in finely-powdered grades — leading to lumping, weight gain, and dispersion issues. Use desiccants in long-term storage areas.

Light: Store in opaque packaging or in dark warehouse. Direct sun exposure can fade pigment in transparent containers, especially for low-lightfastness grades.

Contamination: Keep pigment away from solvents, acids, alkalis, and other reactive chemicals. Cross-contamination from neighboring drums or bags will spec-fail batches downstream.

Shelf life expectations

Pigment FormTypical Shelf Life
Dry powder (paper bag or HDPE drum, sealed)2-3 years
Surface-treated dry powder18-24 months
Pigment paste (water-based)12 months
Pigment paste (oil-based / flushed)12-18 months
Masterbatch granules2 years
Pre-dispersed pigment dispersion (solvent-borne)12 months

FIFO rotation

First-In-First-Out (FIFO) inventory rotation is critical. Mark each drum or bag with the production batch date upon receipt. Use oldest stock first. Don't let stock accumulate beyond 18 months without re-testing — even properly stored pigments can drift in color strength as surface treatments age. Re-validate dispersion and ΔE versus reference before using stock older than 18 months.

Handling safety

Dust control: Pigment powders generate dust during transfer. Use local exhaust ventilation, wear NIOSH N95 (or equivalent) dust masks, gloves, and safety glasses. Avoid scooping powder under high airflow.

Skin contact: Most modern organic pigments are not classified as skin sensitizers, but skin contact should still be minimized to prevent staining. Wash hands after handling.

Spill cleanup: Sweep dry powder spills carefully (avoid airborne dust). Wet mop residual material. Dispose per Safety Data Sheet (SDS) waste codes. Don't flush pigment to drain unless specifically allowed by SDS and local regulation.

When in doubt: re-test

If a drum has been stored for 18+ months, has visible moisture damage, comes from a damaged container, or shows lumping/clumping in the powder, re-validate before bulk use: measure spectrophotometric ΔE versus a fresh reference, run dispersion tests, and visually inspect for color drift. The cost of a 2-hour QC check is much lower than the cost of contaminating a 5000-litre paint batch with off-spec pigment.
